The mechanism (760) has a snail cam (752) that co-operates with a feeler spindle (753) provided in a transmission mechanism (755) for directly/indirectly controlling movement of a rack (756) to control pivoting of an input stage of an isolating wheel set (770), where the mechanism releases or prevents movement of a striking mechanism control rod linkage and/or allows or prevents the strike of a hammer against a gong. The wheel set includes a striking mechanism stop cam, a striking mechanism stop wheel and a movement stopping surprise-piece (780) that are superposed on each other. An independent claim is also included for a timepiece.
