<p>Powdered lime is added to the blast in a basic Bessemer converter which is blown uninterruptedly in the production of low nitrogen steel in amounts which vary during the blow in such manner that all the combustion products which will combine with lime do so without excess lime being added at any time, the temperature of the bath being regulated by the addition of powdered or other cooling agent. The lime may be added rapidly during the combustion of silicon, more slowly during decarburization, and again rapidly during dephosphorization, and it may be added continuously or in stages. The blast may be enriched with oxygen, more particularly during dephosphorization. The cooling agent, e.g. powdered iron oxide or iron scrap, may be added with the blast or through the mouth of the converter and, in addition to iron-containing materials, it may also include limestone, iron carbonate, or other material which evolves gas. Sand or acidic iron ore may be added to improve the fluidity and solubility of the slag in citric acid.</p> |
