A sealant composition comprises a rubbery copolymer of a major proportion of a conjugated diolefin and an aryl substituted ethylene monomer copolymerized in a redox system at a temperature not exceeding 58 DEG F. and vulcanized with 0.2 to 1.0 part of sulphur and 15 to 45 parts of iron oxide or calcium carbonate per 100 parts of copolymer. Diolefins specified are butadiene, piperylene, 2,3-dimethyl butadiene-1,3, 2- or 3-methyl pentadiene-1,3, hexadiene-1,3 or -2,4 and isoprene. The aryl substituted ethylene monomer may be styrene, a -methyl-, p-chloro- or p-methoxy styrene or vinyl naphthalene. The copolymers may be produced in emulsion using as ingredients cumene hydroperoxide, ferrous sulphate, pyrophosphates, soaps and mercaptan modifiers. Examples of the sealant compositions include also zinc oxide, boric acid, hydrogenated rosin, petroleum rubber softeners, rubber accelerators and di-o-benzamido-phenyl disulphide. The compositions are useful in tubeless tyres, inner tubes, rubber balls and rubber swimming pools. |
