The chemistry of swimming pool water is rather complex. The chemical and physical quality of such water is well defined and can be determined by colorimetric or spectrophotometric methods for instance. However, such methods are tideous and subjected to erroneous interpretation since most of the time, the relationship between concentration of chemical compounds such as hypochlorite or total alcali and color changes after reactives addition is based on appreciation of said changes. Each person possesses his own vision accuracy of colors. Therefore, colorimetric methods may not represent a proper mean to evaluate swimming pool water quality with precision. The device described herein has been invented to analyze four chemical parameters of pool water with accuracy and reproductibility. These parameters are: hypochlorite ions (socalled free chlorine), pH, bicarbonate ions (so-called total alkalinity) and calcium and magnesium ions (so-called total hardness). The analyzer works through electrochemical signals, gathered from solid state ionic selective electrodes (SSISE), when water sample is poured into the device's internal reactor. An electronic circuit interprets signals from electrodes and translates said signals into chemical concentrations. Hence, no additions of reactives to generate water sample color changes are needed. Swimming pool water quality results can be obtained after a few minutes after each electrochemical analysis. |
