<p>The method comprises closing a crack (7) in a surface region (28) of a substrate (4) in a first propagation direction (25), passing a welding laser beam in a second direction (10) over the crack, further passing the welding beam over the crack from left-to-right or right to left or transversely to the propagation direction, and refining the crack along its entire depth. The crack is welded using a single weld bead in the propagation direction in the first step. An angle between the second direction and the propagation direction of the crack is 90+- 10[deg] .
