PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer having a simple configuration and able to print with no margin up to the side edges of a recording medium while securely preventing soiling of the recording medium. SOLUTION: In a platen 6, an accommodating groove 33 for accommodating an absorbing material 32 is formed in a downward direction from its reference surface S, that is, in a direction away from a discharging head. Such an accommodating groove 33 is formed such that the areas through which both side edges of recording paper M of each of a plurality of sizes usable in an ink jet printer 1 pass increase in depth from the reference surface S, compared to the depths of the other areas.
