An analytical instrument comprises a liquid chromatography system comprising a first column 1, a chromatographic delay line 9 and a splitter 7 arranged and adapted in a mode of operation to split eluent from the first column 1 into a first portion of eluent and a second portion of eluent. The instrument further comprises a first device 5, such as a mass spectrometer. The liquid chromatography system is arranged and adapted in the mode of operation: (i) to pass the first portion of eluent from the splitter 7 to the first device such that a first part of the first portion of eluent arrives at the first device 5 at a first time t1 and a second part of the first portion of eluent arrives at the first device 5 at a second time t2. The system is further arranged and adapted: (ii) to pass the second portion of eluent from the splitter 7 through the chromatographic delay line 9 to the first device 5 such that the passage of the second portion of eluent from the splitter 7 to the first device 5 is delayed relative to the passage of the first portion of eluent from the splitter 7 to the first device 5, and such that a first part of the second portion of eluent arrives at the first device 5 at a third time t3, where t1 < t3 < t2. The analytical instrument is arranged and adapted to analyse the first part of the first portion of eluent in a first mode of operation and to analyse the first part of the second portion of eluent in a second mode of operation. A method of analysing a sample is also disclosed. |
