摘要 This disclosure describes techniques for resizing multimedia content for efficient statistical multiplexing. In response to a request to resize a current segment of data, an encoding module associated with the selected segment adjusts the amount of motion information to be encoded to resize the segment of data. For example, the encoding module associated with the selected segment of data may merge two or more motion vectors to reduce the amount of motion information to be encoded. As another example, the encoding module reselects encoding modes for one or more blocks of pixels of at least one frame within the segment of data.

A method for encoding a stream of digital multimedia data, the method comprising: determining, by a multiplex module, when an amount of available transmission channel resources for a current transmission frame is exceeded by a plurality of segments of data of the stream of digital multimedia data; generating, by the multiplex module, a request to resize at least one segment of data of the plurality of segments of data; receiving, at an encoder module, the request to resize the at least one segment of data associated with the stream of digital multimedia data for the current transmission frame, the request sent in response to a comparison between quality and rate information of the at least one segment of data and transmission channel resources with respect to the current transmission frame; resizing, at the encoder module, the at least one segment of data by adjusting an amount of motion information to be encoded with the at least one segment of data in response to the request; transmitting, from the encoder module to the multiplex module, the at least one resized segment of data and at least one unresized segment of data for the current transmission frame; and generating, by the multiplex module, the current transmission frame by collecting the at least one resized segment of data and the at least one unresized segment of data.
