[Class 122 (i)] [Also in Group XXXII] In a torsional vibration-damper, in which one or more inertia masses are movable between stops formed by liquid quantities enclosed in spaces between a vibratory part and the inertia mass, the space or spaces temporarily not exposed to the force of the inertia mass during the operation of the damper is put into communication with a supply and a discharge for the liquid, the discharge leading to the outside of the damper, so that through flowing of the liquid takes place in the space. As shown a shaft 1 has attached thereto a collar 2 with vanes 3 forming pistons in an oscillatory damping mass comprising a ring 7 and cheek plates 4, 5, Fig. 2. The ring is recessed to receive the pistons, chambers 10, 11 being formed between the ends of the piston and recess which contain oil to absorb shock either by a direct shock due to compression of the onclosed oil or by graduated shock due to throttling. Oil is supplied by a pump through an axial bore 12, radial duct 14, perforated sleeve 17, annular space 16 and ducts 20, 21 to recesses 22, 23. When the ring 7 moves clockwise due to vibration, ports 29, 31 are opened and the oil flows through the chamber 11 and leaks away through an orifice 39 in a duct 37. On rebound of the ring oil flows back through recess 23, ducts 21, 20 and recess 22 to chamber 10. The ports 28, 29, 40 and 41 may be provided with a sharp cut off or be graduated to produce a throttling effect on the liquid. Air or gas in the liquid may escape through orifices 42, 43 in a duct 15 or annular space 16 respectively before it reaches the chambers and any air in the chambers escapes, when the port 40 or 41 is uncovered, through orifices 38 or 39 respectively due to the effect of centrifugal force which impels the liquid outwardly in the chambers 10, 11 and leaves the air or gas nearer the axial centre.. Stop bolts 44 are inserted in the chambers 10, 11 to prevent excessive movement of the ring when the shaft begins to rotate. In a modification the chambers may be supplied through separate ducts 14, 16. Specifications 447,188 and 499,405 are referred to.
