PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal cycler and a thermal cycling method that enable rapid thermal cycle.SOLUTION: A thermal cycler is provided, comprising: a drop forming part 9 for forming a reaction liquid 140 made from a plurality of drops; a loading part for loading a biochip 100 filled with the reaction liquid 140 and with a liquid 130 having a smaller specific gravity than the reaction liquid 140 and separable form the reaction liquid 140, the biochip 100 including a flow pass 110 in which the reaction liquid 140 travels; a heating part for heating a first region of the flow pass 110 when the biochip 100 is loaded in the loading part; and a driving mechanism for converting the disposition of the loading part and the heating part between a first disposition and a second disposition. At the first disposition, the first region is positioned at the lowermost part of the flow pass 110 with respect to a gravity acting direction. At the second disposition, where the position with respect to a traveling direction of the reaction liquid 140 is different from the first region, a second region of the flow pass 110 is positioned at the lowermost part of the flow pass 110 with respect to the gravity acting direction. |
