Vinyl halide resins are stabilized by adding to the resin aminoguanidine or a salt thereof. Specified resins are polyvinyl chloride, bromide or iodide and copolymers of at least ten per cent vinyl halide and one of the following: vinylidene halide, a maleate, a chloromaleate, a fumarate, a chlorofumarate, an ester of another alpha, beta unsaturated polycarboxylic acid, vinyl acetate, other vinyl esters, styrene, an acrylate, or a substituted acrylate. Specified fumarates are the dimethyl, diethyl, dipropyl, dibutyl, diisobutyl, dihexyl, ditetrahydrofurfuryl, and dibenzyl fumarates. Specified salts are the sulphate, nitrate, acetate, hydrochloride and bicarbonate. The preferred proportion of stabilizer is from 0.2 to 10 per cent. A plasticizing agent, e.g. dibutyl sebacate may also be present. In examples: (1) a vinyl chloride/diethyl fumarate copolymer plasticized with dibutyl sebacate is stabilized with (a) the sulphate, (b) the nitrate, (c) the hydrochloride, and (d) the acetate, of aminoguanidine; (2) a vinyl chloride/diethyl maleate copolymer, and (3) a vinyl chloride/vinylidene chloride copolymer are stabilised with (a) aminoguanidine and (b) its sulphate. Films of the resins may be so stabilised. |
