PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive unit capable of accurately detecting failures of detection parts of a torque detection part, a crank rotation detection part, and a motor rotation detection part used for assist control of an electric assist bicycle, and to provide the electric assist bicycle.SOLUTION: A drive unit includes: a crank shaft 41 which is connected with pedals; a motor rotation detection part 68 which detects rotations of an electric motor 61; a torque detection part 57 which detects torque generated at the crank shaft 41; a crank rotation detection part 58 which detects rotations of the crank shaft 41; and a sensor failure detection part 106 which detects a failure of at least one of the motor rotation detection part 68, the torque detection part 57, and the crank rotation detection part 58 on the basis of detection results of the motor rotation detection part 68, the toque detection part 57 and the crank rotation detection part 58. |
