The method involves determining a relative velocity between the vehicle (1) and a potential collision object. The determined relative velocity of vehicle and collision object is compared with a predetermined threshold value (SW) of the relative velocity. The vehicle opening around the predetermined gap is automatically opened, at forthcoming front collision time before release of airbag (5,6), so that the air pressure predominating in the vehicle interior space is reduced, when the detected velocity exceeds predetermined threshold value.
