The combustion end crank angle (IA) is determined on the basis of the ion current. During ignition timing retarded angle driving after a cold start the combustion end crank angle (IA) is compared to a criterion crank angle (TBF) which is slightly more to the advanced-angle side than in the exhaust valve open timing (EVO) (step 5), and a parameter (F) is set to 1 or 0 in response to whether the combustion end crank angle is more to the retarded-angle side than TBF (steps 6, 7). A percentage (RF), indicating the percent of the ten most recent firings of the engine for which the parameter (F) is 1, is determined (step 10), and if this percentage is equal to or greater than 10% the retarded angle increase amount (R1) for the ignition timing (ADV) is reduced (steps 11, 14). Thus, it is possible to prevent the end of combustion from occurring later than the exhaust valve open timing (EVO).
|
