The hydraulic pump unit has hydraulic pump (20) that drives reluctance machine using flow switch (11) so as to drive serving electric motor (10). The hydraulic pump draws pressure medium from container (14) via conveying line (15). An electrically operable directional valve (23) is controlled to start-up the electric motor. A torque of electric motor is relieved from hydraulic upstream of the directional valve until switch-on point is reached from standstill point.
