METAL MEMBER AND PRODUCTION METHOD THEREOF

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal member provided with a novel modified part.SOLUTION: A metal member comprises a base part made of a parent metal and a modified part formed in at least a part of the base part. The modified part contains 1-30% of oxygen (O), with the whole structure as 100 atomic%, and oxygen containing fine structures of an average crystal grain size of 1 μm or smaller are present nearly uniformly in the region of the modified part from the outermost surface to a depth of at least 5 μm. The metal part having such a modified part can be obtained by irradiating a surface of e.g. a steel material or a titanium based material with a high-energy beam while moving the steel material or the titanium based material relatively. The high-energy beam is e.g. a near-UV nano-second pulse laser having a short wavelength in the near UV region and a pulse width of 10-100 ns.
