PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device to minimize the likelihood of occurrence of damage to one or both of a surgical instrument and a patient's orifice or passage, e.g., oral passage when the surgical instrument is introduced into the orifice.SOLUTION: The invention relates to a surgical device for performing at least one of cutting and stapling of a tissue section according to its various embodiments. The surgical device includes a housing that includes at least two drivers. The surgical device also includes an anvil that can be mechanically attached to the housing and can be moved between an open position and a closed position with respect to the housing. The first driver operates so as to move the anvil to an intermediate position between the open position and the closed position with respect to the housing. The second driver operates so as to move at least a part of the housing between the intermediate position and the closed position with respect to the anvil.
