The method involves using a vehicle key or a vehicle code for starting (101) the motor vehicle. A gear shift lever that is in a neutral position in a selective path of a switching gate is checked (102). An alarm signal is triggered, if the gear shift lever is not in the neutral position. The vehicle engine is started, if the gear shift lever is in the neutral position. The change of the position of the gear shift lever in the shift gate requiring the engine speed to be above a critical upper threshold or below a critical lower threshold is checked.
