The isolating device has an isolating element, by which an exhaust gas tract area (3), particularly an outer casing of a catalytic converter (4), is partially surrounded. The isolating element is adjustable between an isolating position and another position depending on respective parameter (7,8,22), particularly an operating temperature of the catalytic converter. The isolating element is arranged under movement along a mounting direction which is extended parallel or perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the catalytic converter. An independent claim is included for a method for operating an exhaust gas tract of an internal combustion engine, particularly a catalytic converter for exhaust gas aftertreatment, of a motor vehicle.
