Abstract The present invention relates to a method of rendering asbestos containing waste materials harmless by a one step dry method by heating to a minimum of 600 deg C for one hour. In the process the asbestos contained in the waste material decomposes and the fibres are consequently unable to cause mesothelioma and other asbestos diseases. Complete amorphisation occurs to the crystalline fibrous nature of the asbestos the resultant product of which is a non-crystalline material which does not have the hazardous nature of the original fibrous material which can be responsible for causing diseases such as mesothelioma.
