The device has an ignition circuit (250) including an ignition capacitor (254), a switching device, and a transformer (256) with a secondary terminal connected with a first output terminal of an inductive element. A first primary terminal of the transformer is connected with the capacitor and a second output terminal of the inductive element. A second primary terminal of the transformer is connected with the switching device. The first primary terminal of the transformer is positioned between the ignition capacitor and the second output terminal of the inductive element. An independent claim is also included for a discharge lamp with a burner connected with secondary terminal of a transformer.
