摘要 <PICT:0712170/IV (b)/1> In an aerobic fermentation process, the aeration of the p fermentation medium is effected by passing air through a diaphragm which consists of sheet elastic material bearing at least one perforation made without any removal of the sheet material. Suitable elastic materials are natural and synthetic rubbers which may be reinforced by a fabric. The sheet may be 1/16 -/ba3/16 inch thick and may have 50-200 perforations per sq. cm. in the form of punctures made by a round needle or slits of length 5/1000 -/ba1/8 inch which may intersect to form X, V, or Y shapes. The perforations may be distributed uniformly over the diaphragm or may be confined to the middle or peripheral portion. Fig. 2 shows the diaphragm 7 and woven metal guards 6, 8 mounted in a disperser 2; the disperser is immersed in the liquid and air is supplied through line 3. In response to a difference in pressure across the diaphragm, the perforations open and allow a stream of bubbles to pass into the liquid. Alternatively, the perforations may be provided in a collapsible tube or in ordinary rubber tubing.
