PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic azimuth meter that performs accurate azimuth measurement by correcting a deviation in an output of a magnetic sensor due to a magnetic field generated by a rotor of a stepping motor, and decreases the number of correction data pieces needed therefor; and a control method of the electronic azimuth meter. SOLUTION: In the electronic azimuth meter including a transfer mechanism which transfers rotation of the rotor to a pointer to move the pointer, the transfer mechanism has a play requiring reverse rotation of the rotor by a plurality of steps after the rotor is rotated normally and the pointer rotates in a forward direction and before the rotor is rotated reversely and the pointer starts rotating in the opposite direction, and includes polarity determination means (S6) for determining whether a magnetic pole of the rotor is in a predetermined direction when the azimuth measurement is performed based upon the output of the magnetic sensor, and control means (S7) for rotating the rotor reversely to set the direction of the polarity of the rotor to the predetermined direction when the polarity determination means determines that the magnetic pole is not in the predetermined direction.
