[Also in Group XXXII] A mounting for supporting a rigid unit which includes a steam or gas turbine and associated apparatus, comprises a number of leaf springs connected at their lower ends to a bedplate or other base and designed to be connected to the rigid unit at their upper ends, the leaf springs each having flexible portions adjacent their ends and a reinforced middle portion between the two flexible portions. A highpressure turbine 1, a low-pressure turbine 2, a heat exchanger 3, a cooler 4 and a compressor 5 forming part of a gas turbine engine are assembled together to form a single rigid unit. Compressed air from the compressor 5 is led to a heater (not shown) which feeds the turbine 1. The turbine 1 discharges into the turbine 2 which exhausts through the heat exchanger 3 and cooler 4 to the intake of the compressor 5. The unit is supported from the bedplate by two pairs of supports 15, 16. The supports 15 which consist of leaf springs 17 reinforced in the middle section by elements 18, are attached at one end 19 to opposite sides of the heat exchanger 3 and at the other end 20 are clamped to the bedplate. These supports allow the heat exchanger to expand radially. A guide key 23 provided on the axis of the bedplate engages a groove 24 in a part of the heat exchanger to prevent its lateral displacement. The supports 16 are of similar construction to the supports 15 but are arranged so that the bending axes are at right angles to the machine axes. The supports 16 allow the unit to expand axially but not radially. Since the machine casing 6 is comparatively cool there is practically no radial expansion. The invention may be applied to a unit formed by a steam turbine and condenser. The supports 16 may be replaced by a single support on the axis of the bedplate.
