The semi-solid slurry obtained by coagulating and concentrating, e.g. to 50 per cent solids, the liquor pressed from fish in the preparation of fish meal or from fish livers or the like which have been digested with proteolytic enzymes is converted to a dry animal feed by the addition of a phosphate capable of combining with several molecules of water. Other protein-containing feeds, e.g. soya bean meal, fish meal, meat scraps, may be incorporated. The phosphates employed are exemplified by anhydrous disodium phosphate, which takes up water to form the heptahydrate, and dicalcium phosphate in the presence of ammonia, which takes up water to form the heptahydrate of calcium ammonium phosphate. The time for hydration of the phosphate may be reduced by incorporation of a wetting agent, e.g. a sulphonated fish or vegetable oil or a polyoxyethylene sorbitol or glycol fatty acid ester. Lumping of the dry product may be prevented by incorporation of calcium stearate. |
