The method involves acquiring successive images of a scene (21), and selecting a point in the images. A movement of each selected point is determined (29) by analyzing the movement of the point in the images in the form of a time sequence of vectors oriented proportional to the instantaneous speed of movement of the point. The instantaneous acceleration associated with each point is calculated (31). A fall is detected (33) when the instantaneous speed is greater than a predetermined threshold speed and the instantaneous acceleration is greater than a predefined acceleration threshold. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program product for detecting a fall of a person by analyzing a video image stream from an image pickup device (2) a system for detecting a fall of a person by analyzing a video image stream from an image pickup device. |
