A gasification system includes a gasifier and a fuel feed system having a feed preparation section including a grinding device for grinding a particulate fuel to a predetermined size and a humidity control unit for adjusting a moisture content within the fuel. A pressurization and conveyance section in flow communication with said preparation section includes at least one solids pump configured to receive a fuel flow at a first pressure and discharge the fuel at a second pressure. A first conduit in communication with said at least one solids pump channels the pressurized fuel to the gasifier. A slag additive section includes a pump to feed a slurry into the gasifier and control water content of a quantity of feeds into the gasifier by adjusting concentration of the slurry fed into the gasifier, and control melting and flow characteristics of a quantity of particulate fuel ash within the gasification system.
