Compositions for the protection of materials against water and moulds or fungi comprise polyvinyl chloride, refined anthracene oil and a plasticizer the polyvinyl chloride constituting 25 to 65 per cent by weight of these ingredients. By "refined anthracene oil" is meant an anthracene oil which is substantially free from anthracene itself and from phenols, amines and sulphur compounds, and boils at 95-130 DEG C. under 10 mm. pressure. Suitable plasticizers are chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons, e.g. chlorinated diphenyl or dibenzyl, naphthene hydrocarbons, adipates, e.g. methylcyclohexyl adipate, and phosphoric, phthalic and sebacic acid esters, e.g. butyl sebacate and dioctyl phosphate. Stabilizers, pigments, fillers and other fungicides may be added and specified additives are monomethyl naphthalene and thionaphthene. The compositions may be baked into semi-hard or hard plastic after application to the surface or they may be converted into sheets and strips. Compositions which do not exudate are prepared by mixing, at the time of use, polyvinyl chloride impregnated with a baked and cooled polyvinyl chloride composition with a second part comprising the remainder of the composition, essentially the plasticizer and refined oil. Suitable plastcizers are chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons, naphthene hydrocarbons, and adipic, phosphoric, phthalic and sebacic acid esters.
