摘要 722,531. Adjusting bearings. FARREL-BIRMINGHAM CO., Inc. Jan. 4, 1952 [Jan. 4, 1951], No. 326/52. Class 12 (1). [Also in Groups V and XXII]. A calendar or like apparatus, e.g. for rolling very thin films of plastic material, comprises a pair of co-operating rolls mounted for relative approaching and separating movements, a fluid-pressure cylinder and piston for applying pressure to one of the rolls to urge it towards the other, and a screw which acts on the piston and is adjustable to vary the pressure applied by the cylinder and piston to the said one roll, this screw being connected to the cylinder to effect movement of the cylinder to move the said one roll away from the other. The drawings show the invention applied to one roll 14 of a machine including four rolls 11, 12, 13, 14, the roll 14 being movable to and from roll 13. The reduced ends 18 of roll 14 are each mounted in a journal 19 secured by bolts 24 to a hydraulic cylinder 28. The cylinder-journal assembly 28-19 is moved as a unit by rotation of a screw 31 threaded into a standard 16 at 32. Within the cylinder is slidably disposed a cup-shaped piston 40, the pressure fluid space being shown at 42. The screw 31 passes loosely through the head 29 of the cylinder and its end bears against the piston at 45. 'A retracting nut 46 is threaded on the end of the screw inside the cylinder. The pressure in the space 42 is the calendering pressure. When the roll 14 is to be withdrawn from roll 13 the screw is rotated to pull nut 46 against the inside of cylinder head 29. To adjust the axis of roll 14 to make a slight angle to the axis of roll 13 (to compensate for the bowing of the central portion of the rolls under pressure) each end of roll 14 is moved vertically by means of an adjusting screw 48 which moves a nut 21 carrying a wear plate 20 which supports journal 19. When the journal 19 thus moves vertically it moves relative to cylinder 28, the bolts 24 moving in elongated slots and a wear plate 35 secured to the journal rolling on ball bearings 38 in a disc 37 disposed between plate 35 and a similar plate 36 on the cylinder; the disc is carried by plates 56 pivotally supported on the cylinder and journal at 59 and 60. When screw 48 is backed off, a fluid pressure piston 50 pushes the journal down again. Pressure is applied to the fluid, e.g. oil in spaces 42 by means of air-pressure pistons Fig. 7 (not shown).
