The present method constitutes a method for the control of the flow of compressed data derived from the compression of a video sequence according to the JPEG standard. The method is based on the dynamic variation of the extent of compression of each frame, in order to ensure a predetermined and constant compressed-data flow rate. The method employs a proportional-integral-derivative controller (PID-C) in order to control, at the frame level, the quality factor (qf) of a JPEG encoder (JPEG-E), and thus the volume of the produced data. This method also employs a storage space (BUF) which accumulates the compressed data, which are then released at a constant rate. The degree of fullness of the said storage space is employed in the calculation of the integral step of the PID controller (PID-C). The method may be used in systems for real-time video compression and transmission as well as in video compression and storage systems. |
