The method involves filling a hydraulic accumulator (10) with a fluid (18) and gas (16), such that volume ratio of fluid to gas is variable. The filling level (27) in the hydraulic accumulator, is determined by detecting the hydraulic pressure and/or gas pressure (22) in the hydraulic accumulator. The gas temperature in the hydraulic accumulator is used for determining the filling level of the hydraulic accumulator.
