The method involves computing leakage of a common rail system of an internal combustion engine (100) by detecting two pressure values. Approximation curves for a pressure pattern is computed based on the pressure values according to a stop request of the combustion engine, where the rail pressure is increased during a stop request and/or a subsequent stop request to engine stop in relation to the stop request based on of the calculated approximation curve. The approximation curves are computed over a quadratic equation. An independent claim is also included for a computing unit.
