The device has a gas bag (10) attached to a headrest (7) of a vehicle seat (4). A retainer (8) projecting in the direction of a seat surface (5) of the vehicle seat is arranged at an upper section of the headrest. The gas bag is unfolded from above in front of head and/or breast of passengers (3) from the retainer at a distance to a backrest (6) of the vehicle seat during activation of the device. The retainer is adjusted manually and/or by using a motor. A viewing window is arranged between the retainer and an upper edge of the backrest.
