Forging.-An adaptor sleeve for mounting a ball bearing is made by bending a flat strip of metal to form a substantially cylindrical sleeve 12 which is split longitudinally, upsetting the sleeve in a die 18, having a tapered mouth 19 by means of a punch 21 to provide an external taper on the sleeve whilst preserving the internal bore thereof, which taper extends from one end. of the sleeve to, a transverse plane intermediate the ends of the sleeve where it merges into the cylindrical exterior of the remainder of the sleeve, longitudinally slotting at least the cylindrical part and providing it with an external screw thread. The punch may be operated by a screw. press and has a cylindrical part 20 which enters the sleeve and a pressure surface 22 provided by a collar 25 which is movable relative to the part 20 and acts to strip the sleeve therefrom on the outstroke of the punch. The die has a spring-loaded ejector 24. The external surface of the sleeve may subsequently be ground. |
