A method of ensilage comprises the admixture, with the fodder, of a double acid salt of an alkali-metal of the general formula RH5 (PO4)2, n RHSO4, where n lies between 1 and 3. The salt, or a mixture of such salts, or a mixture of simple salts in suitable proportions, is added in such a quantity as to maintain the pH value of the silage between 4.0 and 4.5, 1-2 per cent being generally sufficient to produce this result, thereby inhibiting bacterial action and reducing the content of butyric acid in the silage. The method may be applied to the preservation of urine or manure from undesirable bacterial action; the press-juice from the silage may be used for the same purpose. Specification 430,417 is referred to. |
