The method involves operating an internal combustion engine (2) in a two-stroke operation with directly consecutive combustion and exhaust strokes. A fuel-air mixture is ignited in a combustion chamber (31) of a cylinder (3) of the engine in a combustion cycle. Combustion exhaust gases are expelled by a compression movement of a piston (32) in the cylinder from the combustion chamber in an exhaust stroke. Compressed air is introduced from a compressed air source (11) to an end of the exhaust stroke and prior to the beginning of the combustion cycle.
