Apparatus for testing based electric lamps, more particularly electric incandescent lamps, for circuit continuity comprises means for carrying a lamp to a testing station and supporting it by its base while connecting its contact members in a circuit responsive to interruptions of continuity and subjecting the lamp to vibration while so supported. In the example the testing apparatus is applied to a lamp-finishing machine of the type described in Specification 247,923, [Class 39 (ii)], comprising a series of lamp-holding heads 2 around the peri-. phery of an indexing turret, each head being provided with a pair of jaws 19 and 20 which grip the cap of a lamp, and a cup 8 with an internal bushing 8' to engage the lower part of the bulb 9. The cup 8 is mounted on the upper end of a spindle 10 which is supported within brackets 5, 12 on the turret and urged upwardly by a spring 13, the lowering of the spindle to disengage the cup from the bulb being effected by a stationary cam plate 14 mounted at the testing station to engage a roller 15 extending laterally from the spindle. The cup 8 is lowered from the bulb as the latter approaches the testing-station, at which are mounted a pair of resilient contact fingers 44, 45, positioned to engage the lamp cap contacts when the turret is halted, and agitating means comprising a motor driven vertical shaft 39 carrying a square block 38 on which are secured four flailing-members in the form of spring strips or blades 37 arranged to strike the bulb 9 and subject it to forced vibration. Shorter spring members 43 serve as stiffeners for the blades 37. The motor may run continuously, so that the bulb of every lamp indexed into the station is flailed. The circuit into which the lamp is connected by the contact fingers 44, 45 may consist of a current limiting resistor 51 in series with a battery 50 and the primary winding 52 of a transformer 53 which has its secondary winding connected through an amplifier to a loud speaker 56 or, alternatively, to a solenoid-controlled device for ejecting a defective lamp.
