A fully fashioned stocking blank having a reinforced foot has warp threads knitted with the ground yarn along the inner edge of the foot reinforcement to provide a barrier against ladders commencing in the reinforced area of the foot. At least three warp threads are knitted in a series of at least three adjacent wales or groups of wales at the inner edge of each reinforced area in each course of a number of courses, and in a subsequent course the warp guides are shogged so that the warp threads are knitted in a further series wales offset from the first series in a further number of courses. The shogging of the warp guides is such that at least one wale in the second series is coincident with a wale in the first series and this wale or wales will contain in the course in which shogging occurs a warp loop or loops composed of two or more warp threads. Fig. 8 depicts the structure of the warp stitches where each needle of a series is normally fed by a single warp yarn and Fig. 9 depicts the structure where two needles of a series are normally fed by a single warp yarn. The warp yarn guides may be of tubular formation secured in a holder or may comprise arms pivoted in the holder and having eyes for the passage of the yarns in the lower ends of the arms.
