According to an aspect of the invention, a machine code program (38) is executed on the controller (14) while the debugging tool (52) is activated, and the debugging tool (52) determines a reverse relationship between the machine code (38) running on the controller (14) and at least one high level control instruction (46) shown in the program editor. The debugging tool (52) reads sensor data from a data memory (38) in the controller (14) and assigns the sensor data to the at least one high level control instruction (46), thereby linking the at least one high level control instruction (46) to a real system state during the execution of the machine code program (38).
