摘要 Glycols and/or alcohols are made by reacting non-conjugated cyclic diolefine compounds dissolved in a non-polar solvent with CO and H2 in the presence of a carbonylation catalyst at elevated temperatures and pressures, the ratio of the solvent to the cyclic compound being between 1/2 and 5/1 , preferably 2/1 to 5/1 by volume, with subsequent hydrogenation of the aldehyde product after removal of catalyst. In an illustration of typical apparatus 1-vinyl-cyclohexene-3 is treated with H2 and CO in the presence of a carbonylation catalyst such as cobalt naphthenate or stearate and a non-polar solvent such as heptane or hexane at preferred temperatures and pressures of 225-375 DEG F. and 2000-4000 p.s.i.g. respectively, the residence time being adjusted according to the desired product, long times, e.g. 1/2 -10 hours, tending to the eventual production of glycols. The products from the carbonylation zone after gas separation and optional return of monooxygenated compounds, after phase separation and return of the hydrocarbon layer in which mono-aldehyded but not di-aldehydes are soluble, are treated for catalyst removal and hydrogenated preferably in the presence of a molybdenum sulphide on active carbon catalyst, cf. Specification 664,974, preferably at 400-500 DEG F., and 2000-3500 p.s.i.g., and the products fractionated to yield a C9 monoalcohol and C10 glycol. Examples are provided in which 1-vinyl-cyclohexene-3 and dicyclopentadiene are subjected to the Oxo-synthesis in the presence of a cobalt catalyst and the effect of solvents, residence times and solvent diolefinic ratios on the nature of the products shown. It is stated that the diolefines used may contain other groups containing oxygen, halogen, sulphur or nitrogen. Specifications 614,010 and 647,363 also are referred to.
