A screen is composed of brush tufts arranged in overlapping relationship at an acute angle to the screen surface. The invention is described as applied to a reciprocating screen used to remove powdered starch from sweetmeats which have been moulded in starch-powder moulds. At A, Fig. 1, trays containing the sweetmeats 7 in the starch moulds are fed to region B where they are inverted to discharge their contents and then passed to a conveyor 9 for refilling &c. at C, D, E. The discharged material falls on to the sloping screening-unit F, which is vibrated at its upper end by lever and crank mechanism 14 ... 19 and rests on a roller 13 at its lower end. The upper portion 20a of the screen is a flat sheet merging into a perforated trough-like portion which effects preliminary separation of the starch which falls on to a conveyer 20b for return to the refilling station C. The remainder of the material passes to the trough-shaped brush screen T above which oscillates a cleaning brush 21 carried by arms 22 driven by cranks. The screen T discharges the cleaned sweetmeats on to a shoot 38, and the starch passing through the screen is fed to the conveyer 20b by a further conveyer 37. The brush screen comprises sections composed of longitudinal frame members 27, Fig. 5, connected by arcuate cross members 29 to which longitudinal supports 31 are fixed. Arcuate brush holders 32, Figs. 5, 8 and 9, are arranged transversely across the screen and are of trapezoidal cross-section, the tufts 39 in the side b, d of one brush holder resting on and overlapping the sloping top a, b of the adjacent holder. The tufts may comprise fibre, bristle, hair or nylon elements and the gaps therebetween are narrower than the sweetmeats 6 to be cleaned. In an alternative construction the screen is formed of two longitudinal metal channel members to which the tuft holders are directly secured, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown).
