Foundry pig iron is produced from low grade pig iron of low carbon and manganese and high sulphur content by charging low grade iron produced in a blast furnace into a hot blast, basic or neutral, cupola furnace, operating under reducing conditions with more fuel and slag than are used in normal cupola operation, alloying elements being added if required, and heating the iron to 1450-1600 DEG C. before casting. The cupola charge may also contain iron or steel scrap. The alloying elements may be added as ores, oxides, or slags. The gas produced in the cupola may be used to heat the blast.
|
