The spreading wall plug (1) includes a basically tubular shell body with an axial passage to take the screw or bolt. The shell body has a shaft part (12) at one axial end, and a spreading part at the other. A bulge is formed in the region of the spreading part with divisions round it, and the wall thickness of the spreading part decreases in the bulge zone.
