Oil-soluble polyamines are prepared by reacting an aliphatic amine having from 6 to 20, preferably 8 to 18, carbon atoms per molecule selected from primary amines, secondary amines and mixtures thereof, with a polymeric material having the general formula <FORM:0725169/IV (a)/1> wherein Z is chlorine or <FORM:0725169/IV (a)/2> and wherein x and y are whole numbers from 30 to 1000, the reaction product having a molecular weight within a range of 3000 to 100,000. The reaction is preferably effected by heating the amine with polyvinyl chloride or a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer at 150 DEG to 300 DEG F. in the presence of a solvent such as methanol, benzene or xylene, for from 3-15 hours. The polyamines may be used as additives to lubricating oils, particularly mineral lubricating oils.ALSO:A lubricating oil composition comprises a major proportion of a mineral lubricating oil and a minor proportion of an oil-soluble reaction product of an aliphatic amine having from 6 to 20 preferably 8 to 18, carbon atoms per molecule selected from the class consisting of primary amines, secondary amines and mixtures thereof with polyvinyl chloride or a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer (see Group IV (a)). |
