An accelerometer for aircraft comprises an instrument rest or base 6, an inertia mass 1, means for resiliently supporting the mass including leaf-springs 14, 15 disposed in planes at right angles to each other, the axis of intersection of said planes being perpendicular to the direction of movement of the mass, one end of each of the springs being connected to said rest and the other to said mass, and indicating means to which movement of the mass is transmitted. The instrument rest 6, supports the dial and is clamped in the casing 7 by a threaded ring 9, the glass 10, a packing ring 11 and a distance ring 8. A transverse support member 13 is secured to the rear side of the disc 6. The inertia mass 1 is connected by arms 3 to a support 5. Two longitudinallyextending springs 14 and a transverselyextending spring 15 are secured at opposite ends to the members 5, 13. A pinion 27 connected to an indicating pointer, Fig. 1 (not shown), meshes with a toothed sector 22 having an arm 21 with a slot 20 which receives a pin 19 on a stirrup member 18 carried by the member 5. The stirrup 18 may be turned about the screw 31 to adjust the transmission ratio between the pin 19 and the toothed sector 22. The movements of the mass 1 are damped by a piston and cylinder arrangement 37, 33 to an extent depending on the adjustment of a valve 36 in an outlet channel 35. A maximum indication pointer may be provided.
