[Also in Group V] An extruding apparatus, Fig. 8, comprises a casing 25, a screw 40 that feeds the material forwardly towards a die 46, a screw 43 that pushes the material backwardly, and a screw 45 that feeds the material forwardly, these three screws rotating together. As shown, all the screws are on one shaft. The backward feeding action of screw 43, which is not so strong as the forward feeding action of screw 40, works and kneads the material. A resistor member 48 is provided on the shaft. A temperature-controlling casing jacket 26 is provided. The material is fed into the casing via hopper 42. In modifications: (1) (Fig. 5). There are two screws side-by-side and the part of the casing that surrounds the resistor members 32 is fluted at 34, these flutes being given a slight forward pitch so that material moves forwardly therealong. (2) (Fig. 6). The resistor members are corrugated longitudinally at 35, and these corrugations may be pitched either to assist the material forwardly or to retard it, or they may be disposed parallel to axes of the resistors. (3) (Fig. 9). The casing 25 is open at 50 to allow undesirable ingredients to pass off, or these ingredients may be drawn off by suction: or the opening 50 may be filled with inert gas or other fluid, or may be subjected to raised pressure. The opening 50 may be at the end of the reversely-acting screw 43, as shown, or at the forward end of the forwardly-moving screw 40, or at the forward end of the resistor 32. (4) (Fig. 11, not shown). The screw of Fig. 8 is supplemented by a short forwardly-moving screw disposed parallel to its right-hand end. (5) (Fig. 12). The screw has five parts, viz. (a) the first forwardly-moving part (not shown), (b) the reversely-moving part 66, (c) the resistor 67, (d) a part 65 that advances the material relatively slowly, and (e) a forwardly-moving part 80. (6) (Fig. 13, not shown). The resistor is disposed between the forwardly-moving part and the rearwardly-moving part. (7) (Fig. 14, not shown). The casing is provided with helical flutes of reverse inclination around the resistor. The material may be thermoplastic- or thermosetting, or may be clay. |
