Textile material is impregnated with a substantially neutral aqueous solution containing from 1 to 10 per cent of an alkali metal chlorite or alkaline earth metal chlorite but not containing an activator, excess solution is removed from the material by squeezing, centrifuging or drying and the material is subjected to the action of steam at 110-140 DEG C. for a period not exceeding 15 minutes. The textile material may be composed of fibres of a polyamide, polyacrylonitrile, a copolymer of acrylonitrile and acrylic acid amide, or cotton or viscose rayon, and the chlorite may be sodium chlorite. Sodium dibutyl naphthalene sulphonate may be added as a wetting agent. The steam may be superheated. |
