[Also in Group XL (a)] A magnetic deflection system for a cathode-ray tube comprises two coil pairs 11, 12 and 13, 14, each coil overlying a portion of one and underlying a portion of the other of the neighbouring coils; the inner sides of the coils lie in one cylindrical surface, and the outer sides in a cylindrical surface of greater radius. The coils may be of semi-cylindrical contour or may lie along spiral curves. The system may comprise a double set of coils, the coils of one set 26, Fig. 5, overlapping outwards in a clockwise sense, and the coils of the surrounding set 27 in the opposite sense. All coils may overlap in the same sense. The double set of coils may be operated in push-pull. The turns in each coil may be spaced apart in accordance with a cosine distribution or with a distribution obtained by symmetrical angular projections from the axis of the system. In assembly the coil pairs or sets of coil pairs are adjusted in position on a cylinder about a magnetometer consisting of two mutually perpendicular loops. A null signal method is used. In a radar display system the deflection system surrounds a rotating pair of deflection coils. |
