A vacuum cleaner (10, fig 1) for removing debris from a surface to be cleaned, Comprises a housing (14, fig 1) comprising a suction nozzle 54 defining a suction chamber 38 having an inlet opening and an outlet opening 56, an agitator 40 provided in the suction chamber 38, a passageway 104 at a forward portion of the housing and in fluid communication with the suction chamber 38, a suction source fluidly connected to the suction nozzle 54 for generating a working air stream through the suction nozzle 54 and a roller 68 mounted to the housing in front of the agitator 40 for rotation about a rotational axis (Y, fig 2) and having multiple radially-spaced sealing elements 76 defining debris chambers 77 between adjacent sealing elements 76, wherein upon the rotation of the roller 68 about the rotational axis (Y, fig 2), the sealing elements 76 sequentially form a temporary seal between the passageway 104 and the surface to be cleaned S such that a corresponding debris chamber 77 is fluidly coupled to the suction chamber 38 and debris D in the corresponding debris chamber 77 is ingested through the passageway 104. |
