The system and method disclose determine and reserving routes for moving transporting devices, moving transporting devices when transporting one or more of a plurality of containers, and control the transporting devices to retrieve one or more of the plurality of containers from within one or more of a plurality of stacks. Prior to retrieving the desired container from within the stack, other (undesired or non-targeted) containers require moving. The undesired containers are moved by placing each of these undesired containers in an optimised position, excluding the original stack from which it was removed. This allows for the position of the undesired container to be optimised based on factors such as frequency of access. The movement and actions of the transportation devices can also be optimised to limit the number of movements the devices has to take. These sorts of system are used with in warehouses and storage facilities. |
